The Path of Chan

Chan derives from the Sanskrit word dhyana, which means meditation or meditative state, and developed in China from around the 6th century onwards.
Through the lineage of the Six Ancestors of Chan (Bodhidharma, Huike, Sengcan, DaoXin, Hongren & Yuquan ShenXiu) and the multitude of Chan Masters that followed there are many traditional methods and practices to achieve gradual or sudden Enlightenment.

In this workshop we shall walk the Path of Chan using the practices of the ancient Masters seeking liberation and personal Enlightenment both large and small, profound & mundane.

The Path of Chan

"Essence and appearance both empty, sages and ordinary people are equal; there is no Buddhahood to attain, no mass of beings to liberate, no personal spirit to find.

In a moment without fabrication, the ten directions are cut off. There is nothing inherent, nothing attained; self and other subsume each other, fact and principle are not disparate. Present in every atom, fully revealed in every land, the Dharma is fundamentally such—thought cannot reach it.

This can be called the one road into nirvana of the Blessed Ones of the ten directions."

Master Cizhao, cited in Precious Mirror of the Lotus School of Mount Lu
Zen in the Pure Land
